JOHOR BARU: The two teenagers who ran away from their home in Durian Daun, Malacca, five days ago were found in Taman Johor Jaya here yesterday.
The parents of Chee Shwu Hui and Lau Xiau Hui, both 14, and former Kota Melaka MP Lim Guan Eng rushed to Johor Baru after receiving a call from a woman who told them that the girls were safe with her.
The woman, who wanted to be known as Jo, said she got to know the girls through a friend who brought them to see her on Monday afternoon as they needed a place to stay.
“They told me that they had run away from home because they wanted freedom and were facing problems at school.
“I could relate to their predicament as I was a teenager before. I told them that they could stay in my house but they would have to follow certain rules,” she said.
Jo said she allowed the girls to stay and look for a job but they failed in their attempt to find employment.
She said she called Lim after reading an article about the girls in the papers.
Lim said he received a call from Jo at noon and after confirming that the call was not a prank, he informed the girls’ parents and they immediately left for Johor.
When the girls' parents and Lim arrived, the girls hid in a bedroom and refused to leave for home initially, but relented after much persuasion.
The parents of the two girls had gone to the press after the girls, who were schoolmates and best friends, failed to return home after school last Friday.
