MUAR: The state government has decided to name a low-cost housing scheme in Jalan Joned here as Taman Tun Sulaiman Ninam Shah.
Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said it was to honour the late Umno permanent chairman's contribution not only to the district, but also the state and the nation.
Speaking at a ground-breaking ceremony for the scheme yesterday, he said the late Sulaiman had contributed a lot towards boosting and maintaining political and economic development here.
“The late Tun Sulaiman had served the people, especially in Umno, since the day the party was founded in 1946.
“His death on July 5 was a great loss not only to the local residents but to Umno and the Barisan component parties as well,” he said after the ceremony.
Abdul Ghani said the scheme, located across the road from SM Maahad near Tanjung Ketapang, would have 224 units of low and low-medium-cost houses.
He said the land, measuring nearly three hectares and located in Bandar Maharani, had high land value, but the state decided to build low-cost homes for those in the lower income bracket.
He said this was also aimed at streamlining residential growth areas in Bandar Maharani and to provide low-income earners with an opportunity to own houses.
Abdul Ghani, accompanied by State Secretary Datuk Ayob Mion, state executive council members and Parit Bakar assemblyman Mohd Ismail Mohd Shah later visited Sulaiman's wife Toh Puan Rose Othman.
