KUANTAN: Thousands lined the main streets here to watch the mammoth parade held in conjunction with the centennial celebrations of the Kuantan Chinese Chamber of Commerce.
The occasion on Friday night was marked by bright colours, music from various communities and performances by troupes like the Penang Chingay Association where performers carried giant flags on long flagpoles in a variety of ways.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob flagged off the parade at Stadium Darul Makmur, with several prominent Chinese businessmen carrying lanterns for about 500m as part of the festivities.
The stadium was packed with about 3,000 people watching the on-site performances before the parade, and the streets covered by the parade were lined with cars parked along the curbs and people eager to catch the performances.
More than 2,500 participants, including schoolchildren, performed dances, gymnastics and acrobatics at the parade.
Adnan, in his opening address, said unity among races was evident as Malaysians could still enjoy parades and other forms of entertainment organised collectively.
“We are fortunate to live in a peaceful and prosperous country to be able to enjoy such entertainment,” he said.
Chamber chairman Datuk Pheng Yin Huah called on the Government to focus on the small and medium-scale industry, by setting up industrial estates and making loans more readily available.
“SMIs are the backbone of our economy and we should look into having more facilities made available to them,” he said in his speech.
