MIRI: The endangered black swifts that produce the lucrative bird's nest have been saved from extinction in the prehistoric Niah National Park in northern Sarawak.
According to Dr Lim Chan Koon, the officer-in-charge of conservation projects in the park, strict enforcement and the direct involvement of local native communities in conservation efforts, managed to reverse the drastic decline in the population of the birds that was caused by over-harvesting and illegal smuggling of nests.
