ALOR STAR: The High Court here was asked to cite Puteri Umno chief Azalina Othman Said for contempt of court for a statement she made about a PAS member who allegedly exposed himself to a Puteri member, when the appeal against his acquittal was pending.

Lawyer Karpal Singh, who represented Razak Abas, made the application yesterday when the appeal was called up for hearing.

He said Azalina’s statement, in New Straits Times on June 21, amounted to contempt of court as it was made when the prosecution’s appeal against Razak’s acquittal was pending.

Razak, 53, was acquitted of a charge of insulting the modesty of Yusnita Romli, 28, by exposing himself to her on July 11 last year.

He was acquitted on Dec 26 last year. The prosecution filed an appeal against the acquittal.

Karpal Singh asked the High Court yesterday to issue a show-cause notice to Azalina to appear in court to explain why she should not be committed to prison for gross criminal contempt of court. He said Azalina had made the statement during the 54th Umno general assembly.

Judicial Commissioner Datuk Zainal Adzam Abd Ghani fixed Oct 19 to hear Karpal Singh’s application and the appeal against Razak’s acquittal. He also fixed the same day to hear another appeal by the prosecution to set aside a magistrate’s court order, which barred all parties from airing anything in relation to the charge against Razak.
