Cheerleading team in town to conduct clinics

PETALING JAYA: Members of Team Britain, the British Cheerleading Association’s national display squad, arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday for Cheer 2003, the country’s only national inter-school cheerleading competition. 

Phillip Rowlands, Debbie Kiff, Bonnie Crow and Lianne Millward are in town to conduct clinics incorporating cheerleading and safety techniques today and tomorrow at KDU College in Damansara Jaya and at the Komtar Geodesic Dome in Penang on June 24.  

The four British cheerleaders, who are accompanied by their manager, Teresa Crow, will also judge the competition which takes place next week. They will be joined by Choo Kim Lian from the Malaysian Gymnastics Federation on the judging panel.

The current Miss Malaysia/Universe Elaine Daly will be the guest judge for the Best Dressed category.  

Cheer 2003 marks the fourth year that The Star Youth2 is organising the competition. Skincare brand Clean & Clear is the co-organiser. The event is supported by the Education Ministry and Youth and Sports Ministry. 

A total of 25 teams from 22 schools in the Klang Valley, Ipoh and Genting Highlands (Pahang) will be competing in the one-day competition, where the grand champion will walk away with the championship trophy, RM5,000, a Clean & Clear hamper worth RM300, and a medal and certificate for each cheerleader. 

The first runner-up will receive RM3,000, a Clean & Clear hamper worth RM200, and a medal and certificate for each cheerleader, while the second runner-up will get RM2,000, a Clean & Clear hamper worth RM100, and a medal and certificate for each cheerleader. 

There are also additional awards for the squad with the best showmanship (RM500 and a Clean & Clear hamper worth RM200) and the best dressed squad (vouchers from sports brand Adidas); eight new squads will compete for the inaugural Best Newcomer award (RM500 and a Clean & Clear hamper worth RM200). 

The competition will be held at Stadium Malawati in Shah Alam from 9am to 5pm on June 29. Admission is free.
