KUCHING: About 400 delegates are expected to attend the New Zealand Alumni Convention 2004 to be hosted by Sarawak here in July next year, New Zealand Centre managing director Rodger Chan said.

He said the convention, scheduled to start on July 8, was to enhance closer relations for mutual benefit between nations through New Zealand’s worldwide alumni network.

Themed “Its a Small World for Alumni – Towards a Better World,” the convention hoped to promote trade, tourism, education, culture and understanding, he told reporters here yesterday.

Apart from Malaysia, delegates from New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, Brunei, Taiwan, Fiji, Indonesia, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Britain, the United States and African countries were also expected at the three-day convention.

An estimated 13,000 Malaysians have been educated in New Zealand, with many currently occupying senior positions in the private and government sectors.

At present about 1,086 Malaysians are studying in New Zealand, contributing about NZ$38mil (RM84mil) to its economy annually. – Bernama
