KOTA KINABALU: A fisherman was killed and two others were seriously injured when the trawler they were in crashed into a floating generator in Sepanggar Bay yesterday.

Helmi Hadir, 27, the assistant skipper, who was steering the trawler, died on the spot while another crew member was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with serious injuries. A third victim was given outpatient treatment while four other crew men escaped unhurt.

Kota Kinabalu City police chief Asst Comm Hamdan Mohamad said initial investigations found that the vessel had drifted and collided with the floating generator operated by Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd at 5.30am.

It is believed that Helmi dozed off and was not in control of the trawler when it crashed.

The fertiliser-laden trawler was on its way from here to Lok Poring in Sepanggar Bay when the incident occurred.

Marine police rushed to the scene when alerted about the accident.
