KUALA LUMPUR: Those planning to travel within the country during this school holidays can look forward to a cheaper vacation as Malaysia Airlines is offering discounted domestic tour packages to selected destinations.

The national carrier has introduced the “Golden Holidays Great Getaways” packages at a discounted price of between 35% and 40% beginning this month until August.

Launched by Culture, Arts and Tourism Minister Datuk Paduka Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir yesterday, travellers can choose a selection of 22 three-day-two-night stay packages inclusive of return economy class airfare, accommodation, breakfast, airport transfers and optional sightseeing tours with prices ranging from RM182 and RM629.

Kadir said that for instance, a traveller could choose a three-day-two-night package from here to Kuching at only RM380 as opposed to its normal cost of RM524.

The cheapest, which is offered at RM182, is a three-day-two-night package from Labuan to Kota Kinabalu, which is inclusive of return economy class airfare, accommodation at Shangri-La Hotel, breakfast and airport transfers.

“Malaysians should take this golden opportunity to travel within the country through the arranged tour packages,” he told reporters after the launch at Mutiara Hotel here yesterday.

He said Malaysians should opt for tour packages rather than plan holidays on their own because the packages offered the best prices as tour operators had already negotiated with hotels and transport companies.

“We believe the SARS outbreak is over. That is why we are launching the packages. We are confident that it will help stimulate domestic tourism growth,” said MAS senior general manager Datuk Ahmad Fuad Dahlan.

He said the national carrier spent RM1.5mil on the advertising campaign for the packages which begin today.

“After this launching, we will have campaigns over radio and television to make consumers aware about the discounted travel packages,” he said, adding that MAS would also have additional 57 domestic flights during the school holidays.

On the domestic route, he said the national carrier anticipated its weekly domestic load to double to almost 30,000 with the introduction of the packages.

The “Golden Holidays Great Getaways” is a collaborative venture operated by Tourism Malaysia, Malaysian Association of Hotels, Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents and the Car Rental Associations of Malaysia.
