LANGKAWI: Newly-elected MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting made a special trip here to thank Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad for having the confidence in both him and Datuk Chan Kong Choy to lead the party.

Ong said he was very thankful to Dr Mahathir for his encouraging words to him and Chan, who is the new MCA deputy president.

“We will work hard to reunite MCA and do our level best to prepare for the coming general election.

“The Prime Minister’s kind words and encouragement will certainly help us to motivate the party further,” Ong said when approached yesterday after attending the welcoming reception here for 28-year-old Abdul Malik Mydin who completed a 48km swim from Kuala Perlis to Kuah.

Ong met Dr Mahathir at the Langkawi Lagoon Resort and followed the latter to visit several projects before they attended the reception.

It was the first time he had met Dr Mahathir after being elected as MCA president by the party’s central committee on Friday.

Asked if there would be a Cabinet reshuffle following the change in the MCA leadership, Dr Mahathir said: “I’ll think about it. We will tell you when we decide.”
