KUALA LUMPUR: A Year Five pupil drowned while swimming in a mining pond near Desa Water Park in Taman Desa here.
The 11-year-old victim, Ashraf Anwar, of Sek Ren Danau Perdana, was believed to have encountered difficulties when swimming in the pond.
His friends and nine-year-old brother yelled for help when they saw Ashraf struggling in the water at 6pm yesterday.
A man, identified as Giram Sidin, 27, who was fishing nearby, jumped in to help Ashraf but he failed to save the boy.
He then rushed out of the pond to call the Fire and Rescue Department for help.
Department operation chief Mohd Tahir Husin said they found the boy’s body at 6.30pm and contacted his family.
His father Anwar Ibrahim said he had warned his sons not to play in the mining pool near their apartment.
