PETALING JAYA: If you are looking for a website where significant information on major diseases can be found, check out Dr Muruga Vadivale’s personal website at

There you can find information on diseases that made the news headlines in the past six years, including the latest, SARS.

Dr Muruga, 45, a director of a pharmaceutical company, developed the website in 1995 and over the years has included the latest information on major diseases published by doctors, as well as news reports from all over the world.

He said the SARS page had links to the World Health Organisation and Communicable Disease Control sites, including the latest updates on the spread of the disease in other countries.

“There is also a forum in which members of the public can discuss the related subjects and I try to answer as many questions as I can,” he said, adding that the SARS page received more than 18,000 hits last month.

MY CONTRIBUTION: Dr Muruga showig his website which contains up-to-date information on all types of tropical diseases including SARS.

“I started the website in 1995 to do my own research and created links to other websites containing medical journals that I needed and can access at any time,” he said when met at his office yesterday.

“There is so much information one can gather from the Internet and it’s just a matter of looking at the right sites to get the right information,” he said, adding that he began gathering information on the hand, foot and mouth disease when the outbreak occurred in 1997.

Dr Muruga said his website also contained a page on haze as there were many health questions related to it.

“I gather the information because I want to know about it and rather than keep it to myself, I share the knowledge with other people,” he said.

He added that words of encouragement from his peers and visitors to his website were what motivated him to continue to maintain the website.

“However, I do not have enough time to update the website regularly as I used to,” he said, adding that the website had been programmed to automatically update itself through the links from other websites.
