SMS to check on licence, road tax

PUTRAJAYA: Subscribers of DiGi and Maxis will be able to check the status of their driving licence and road tax through the short messaging service (SMS).

The customers would be charged the normal rate for each message sent out. However, every reply costs RM1.

The Driving Licence and Road Tax Renewal Status Check via SMS service is developed by Langkah Teknologi Sdn Bhd.

At the launch yesterday, Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general Datuk Emran Kadir said more features and services would be introduced if this one proved to be beneficial.

“If the public is comfortable with this, it is quite possible that we will employ this system to conduct many other services in future,” he said.

DiGi and Maxis users only need to key in a text message that reads “JPJ IC” followed by a space and their identity card number or “JPJ RN” followed by a space and their vehicle plate number, and send them to 39988 to receive updated information on whether they are required or allowed to renew their licence or road tax.
