TEN mothers, who had raised their children to greater heights despite the odds, were recognised by the MIC yesterday.
They were each garlanded by MIC Wanita chief Jaya Partiban while party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, his deputy Datuk S. Subramaniam and vice-president Datuk S. Veerasingam gave them cash, bouquets of flowers, saris and hampers.
The 10 were Koo Sow Lin, R. Rajaisawary, Saraswathy Naidoo, Irene Benedict Fernandez, P. Viruthambal, V.Thilagavathiammal, R. Amirthavali, A. Vasandra Devi, P. Subhalaksme and K. Menachy.
While some of them had to manage their households on their husbands meagre salaries, others were forced to work to support their children after the death of their husbands.
Viruthambal, 75, said she was happy that all her 11 children were doing well although her late husband V. Ponnam-balam was the only breadwinner in the family.
I was a full-time housewife and took care of the children. Today, they all hold good jobs in various sectors, she added.
Viruthambal, whose husband was a founder member and first chairman of Kampung Pandan MIC branch, was also once the branch's first woman leader.
Her advice to the younger generation is to devote time to helping others while upgrading themselves.
