MALACCA: Two sisters, aged seven and nine, drowned while playing beside a man-made pond in a construction site some 100m from their house in Kampung Solok Gaung in Ayer Molek yesterday.

Nurindan and Nurintan Padilah were playing with two other siblings at 1pm when they apparently slipped and fell into the pond.

Their brother, Nurfitri Osman, rushed back to inform an uncle who was at home.

The girls’ grandmother, Hasnah Mohan, said they had earlier returned from their school and went to the pool without telling anyone.

“This is the first time they went to the construction site, which is about 100m from our house.

“The area is surrounded by bushes and small mountains.

“The two of them could have slipped into the pond and failed to get out of the water.

“When Nurfitri informed us, we rushed to the place hoping to save them but they were dead by then,” she said at the Malacca Hospital mortuary.

Several villagers and construction workers had helped to find the bodies.

Ayer Molek assemblyman Datuk Mo’min Abd Aziz said he would talk to the developer to fence up the area and put up signboards to warn people not to let their children play there.
