JOHOR BARU: Sales of Leslie Cheung's movies and music albums have skyrocketed since the Canto-pop superstar's suicide on April 1.

Music Valley Sdn Bhd operations manager Lee Sin Giap said the demand for Cheung’s movies and music albums almost doubled at all its outlets nationwide.

“Before his death, some of his albums were not on sale here because there was not much demand but now we have to keep replenishing our stock to meet the increasing demand.

“Normally, we would sell between 50 and 100 of his movies and music albums but since his death we have sold 1,000 copies,” he said.

Lee said most customers go for Cheung’s concert MTVs and movies like Farewell My Concubine, The Bride with White Hair and The Phantom Lover.

Tower Records Malaysia also said response to Cheung’s movies and music had been so good that they had to import them from Hong Kong, China and Taiwan.

“We have replenished our stock but it is still not enough because many people want to buy his CDs and VCDs.

“Usually, we only sell one or two of his albums a week but since his death we sold some 800 copies,” a spokesperson said.

She said on the day of Cheung’s funeral which was telecast “live” over Astro, some of his fans gathered at Tower Records to watch the event.

The response from Cheung’s fans was so overwhelming that Tower Records placed a table at its outlet for them to place flowers as a tribute to the superstar.
