KUALA LUMPUR: The Women and Family Development Ministry says societies and organisations dedicated to supporting families of children with disabilities play a vital role.

Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the ministry would back initiatives, especially by parents of special children, because they served as a pillar of strength for people struggling to help their offspring lead normal and productive lives.

These groups, she added, were a reference hub for parents needing guidance and information on coping with and assisting their special children.

“My ministry will be able to give the required help to organisations set up by parents of special children for them to carry out their programmes and projects,” she said after launching the Dyslexia Association Kuala Lumpur's Open Day and Jogathon yesterday.

Shahrizat said the Government acknowledged the importance of providing infrastructure and support for people with various disabilities.

She said although children's issues came under the National Unity and Social Development Ministry, support for parents of special children fell under the auspices of her ministry since it was part of family development.
