KUALA LUMPUR: When Malaysian Medical Relief Society (Mercy) president Dr Jemilah Mahmood called her comrades moments before she crossed into Iraq on Friday, she warned that it could be her last communication until she returned from the country.

Knowing the risks involved and how Baghdad had turned into a near “non-contactable” zone, Dr Jemilah proceeded with the journey with four other volunteers, said Mercy vice-president Assoc Prof Dr Azhar Abdul Aziz.
