KANGAR: The state government has directed all villages to beautify the surroundings with bougainvillea plants to mark Visit Perlis Years 2003 to 2005.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said beautiful plants such as the bougainvillea can “reduce mental pressure” among tourists.

As landscape parks and gardens can cause a calming effect on visitors, there is a need for more such green environments, Shahidan said at the opening of a bougainvillea park in Bukit Lagi by the Regent of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail on Tuesday evening.

Present were the Raja Puan Muda Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen Datuk Khalil Akshah after whom the park is named, State Speaker Abdul Azib Saad, state exco members, Indera Kayangan assemblyman Oui Ah Lan, Kangar municipal council president Baharudin Ahmad and Malaysian Consul-General based in Songkhla, Wan Ja’afar Wan Mahamud.

Shahidan said the Federal government has allocated RM5mil to the state to carry out landscaping projects.

He thanked Tuanku Syed Faizuddin for his excellent ideas and insight for the development of state’s tourism sector, adding planting the bougainvillea was his idea.
