Ling grateful for support to build Utar

GERIK: The 33-year dream to build Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) was finally realised as a result of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad's encouragement and support, said president Datuk Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik. 

He said work on the Utar campus in Kampar was going smoothly also because of the support and help from other quarters like the Perak government and Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohd Tajol Rosli Ghazali.

The state had allocated 520ha for the university. 

Dr Ling said the MCA managed to collect RM180mil for Utar, and its intake would increase to 3,000 students next month from the present 1,000 students. 

He said Utar would also accept students from the 60 Chinese independent schools in the country to further their studies. 

Dr Ling was speaking at a dinner organised by the Gerik MCA on Sunday night. 

Also present were Tajol Rosli, Betong mayor Datuk Khunawut Mongkhonprajak, National Unity and Social Development parliamentary secretary Datuk Khamsiyah Yeop and state MCA chairman Datuk Ong Ka Chuan. 

During the dinner, Dr Ling received a cheque for RM200,000.88 for Utar. Of the amount, RM88,888.88 was collected by the Gerik MCA division, RM100,000 was pledged by Tajol Rosli on behalf of the state Barisan Nasional while another RM10,000 and RM2,000 were donated by the Gerik Umno division and Khunawut respectively.  

In his speech, Tajol Rosli said Dr Ling had contributed much to the development of the country. 

In Batu Pahat, the MCA division raised RM1,788,000 during a fund-raising dinner. 

Batu Pahat MCA chairman Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek presented a cheque for the amount to MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting.
