KUANTAN: Non-governmental organisations have been asked to organise integrated community care programmes with the Government for the elderly, National Unity and Social Welfare Minister Datuk Dr Siti Zaharah Sulaiman said yesterday.

She said her ministry would help the NGOs organise better and well-planned programmes for the elderly.

“Malaysia has to be ready to care for the aged because 7% of our population will reach the age of 69 by 2007. Malaysians are enjoying a higher quality of life and all should chip in.

“We will introduce a programme emphasising more interaction and communication with the elderly,” she told reporters after handing over food donations to the poor at Kampung Chempaka, Pantai Sepat, near here yesterday.

Siti Zaharah said the example of the Malaysian Gerontology Association, which organises caring programmes for the elderly, including courses for parents or youths, should be followed.
