PETALING JAYA: Todays understanding of jihad to mean holy war is a result of manipulation by the Western media of its original meaning that is tainted by Orientalist biases, a Malaysian political scientist said.
Dr Farish Noor, who is an academic researcher at the Berlin-based Centre for Modern Orient Studies, said jihad was a broad concept which, loosely translated, meant struggle.
