KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Information Minister Datuk Zainuddin Maidin has called on Malaysians to have a critical mind and self-censorship when watching news reports on the war in Iraq carried by CNN and BBC.

He said the reports were clearly in the form of propaganda which favoured the West, particularly the United States and its allies.

He said that RTM had no choice but to broadcast news coverage that it got from satellites which were dominated by the West, although the Information Ministry realised that these broadcasts were in the form of propaganda.

He said this in response to complaints from the public that RTM still took news reports provided by foreign news agencies although the visuals and reports were highly subjective and one-sided.

“However, there are positive aspects from such portrayals as they create awareness among the public who generally have their own opinion on the attitude of the Western media,” he said.

Zainuddin also advised the public to adopt the same attitude when watching news released by Al Jazeera because it was also not an independent news station. – Bernama
