PETALING JAYA: Malaysians started their day with news that the United States had launched an attack on Iraq. There was all-round condemnation of the action.

Financial adviser Dr Ramli Abdul Wahid said he was surprised and angry at the attack as there were other ways to resolve the issue.

“I thought it’s just propaganda to threaten the Iraqis,” he said. “This will affect our imports and exports. We have to plan to face any eventualities as a result of the war.”

Loh Wan Shung of Royal Selangor Marketing Sdn Bhd was equally surprised with the attack. “Iraq was attacked? Why so soon? I think (President George W.) Bush is using his position as president to go to war,” he said.

In Johor Baru, restaurant operator Thaslim Muhammed said there would be no winner in the war, but only losers with hundreds of thousands of people killed.

“Do you think Bush and (Iraqi President) Saddam Hussein will be among the casualties in this war? I don’t think so; it is the innocent people who will suffer,” he said.

Businessman Tan Bong Kuang said the war would only worsen the already gloomy world economy as prices of petroleum and related products were expected to increase.

“The war may be so far away from here but I honestly feel a little terrified because should it go on beyond the US prediction (of a short war), we will definitely feel the pinch,” he said.

“I don’t think attacking Iraq will resolve any conflict between Bush and Saddam ... it will only make the situation worse.”
