KULIM: The magistrate’s court here issued a warrant for the arrest of Parti Keadilan Nasional supreme council member N. Gobalakrishnan who failed to turn up for trial yesterday.

He was among 10 opposition leaders jointly tried for allegedly taking part in an illegal assembly and wrongfully confining bus drivers and passengers during the Lunas by-election on Nov 29, 2000.

Sungai Petani Sessions Court Judge Rosnaini Saub, who is presiding as a magistrate, issued a non-bailable warrant of arrest after DPP Hashim Hamzah told the court that Gobalakrishnan was not present.

Hashim told the court the hearing had dragged on for almost a year because of such problems.

Defence counsel Md Yunus Shariff told the court that Gobalakrishnan had informed one of the 10 accused that he could not attend the trial because he was not feeling well.

In the dock were Keadilan vice-presidents Mohd Azmin Ali, 37 and Chua Tian Chiang, 40, (also known as Tian Chua), Youth chief Mohd Ezam Mohd Noor, 35, supreme council member Ruslan Kassim, 41, Kedah Keadilan Youth secretary Zamil Ibrahim, 34, Taman Sejahtera, Lunas, PAS branch former Youth chief Ahmad Khairudin Jamaluddin, 35, Sungai Petani PAS Youth committee member Khairi Yahya, 22, Kota Kuala Muda PAS committee member Mohd Fauzi Awang Kechik, 23, and PAS volunteer Khairul Nizar Ismail, 31.

The trial continues on May 7 and 8.
