PETALING JAYA: The MCA divisions of PJ Utara and PJ Selatan have raised RM1,067,776mil for Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar), bringing the total amount collected to RM173mil.

The two divisions held a charity dinner on Saturday, attended by MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik and his wife Datin Seri Ena Ling.

In his speech, Dr Ling said it did not matter how much one donated as each contribution was important and it indicated that the donor was supporting a good cause, which was education.

FOR A GOOD CAUSE: Dr Ling and Ena with several MCA leaders after receiving mock cheques at a charity dinner on Saturday.

He said the MCA headquarters received many letters daily with donations for amounts ranging from RM1 to cheques for thousands of ringgit.

The setting up of the university would take 10 to 15 years and cost between RM600mil and RM800mil, he said.

Dr Ling said Utar recently took in 300 students, out of which 213 were from Chinese independent schools.

The university had 1,000 students now, he added.
