KANGAR: Two groups of male students at a secondary school here clashed over a girl, resulting in 21 being detained by the police and eight receiving outpatient treatment.

The Form Two to Form Five students had used steel rods, sticks, belts and chairs to challenge each other during the squabble that broke out during a sports event at 9am yesterday.

Kangar OCPD Supt Muhammad Sabtu Osman said the students had removed the rods from the steel chairs in their classrooms. Police were forced to detain them to ascertain if gangsterism was a factor.

The brawl had erupted after one group confronted the other for allegedly disturbing a girl near the school on Thursday evening.

One student received a gash on the forehead which required stitches while seven others received superficial cuts.

Police plan to meet the teachers, parents and students concerned next week over the matter, Supt Muhammad Sabtu said.

He also did not rule out picking up more students to assist in the investigations.

Kangar CID chief ASP V. Raja urged the parents of the affected students not to take sides.

“Let the police and school authorities investigate to determine the actual cause. Parents should not be unduly alarmed.”
