KUALA PILAH: A 25-year-old unemployed man was sentenced to ten years imprisonment by the Sessions Court here yesterday for statutory rape committed two years ago.

Judge Harminder Singh Dhaliwal also ordered Airul Shahril Bakar of Felda Lui Timur, Jempol, in Negri Sembilan, to be given two strokes of the rotan.

Asst Supt Mazupi Abdul Rahman prosecuted while Airul was represented by counsel G. Siva Kumar.

The accused committed the offence by raping an underaged girl on Oct 29, 2000, between 9am and 11pm at a surau on the first floor of the Kuala Pilah bus station.

Earlier, in mitigation, Siva Kumar urged the court to consider that it was the accused's first offence.

ASP Mazupi, however, objected saying the accused had raped the underaged girl several times on that day.
