PETALING JAYA: The consumption of green and hawksbill turtle eggs should be banned so that the two species of marine reptiles will not follow the extinction path of the leatherback turtle, said the World Wide Fund for Nature Malaysia.
Its government and aid agencies director Kevin Hiew said although there was a complete ban on the consumption of leatherback eggs since 1988, the move was too late as years of total consumption had dealt a heavy toll on the Rantau Abang leatherback population that was also impacted by high-sea destructive fishing gear.
