PETALING JAYA: Lawyer M. Manoharan has been elected as the new Selangor DAP chairman to replace Ahmad Nor, who died on Feb 11.

State DAP secretary Ronnie Liu, who was eyeing the top post, was chosen as deputy chairman while Bandar Klang state assemblyman Teng Chang Kim and T. Kannan were elected as the vice-chairmen.

The meeting on Wednesday was a heated one with Liu’s faction wanting to appoint an acting chairman while Teng’s faction wanted a reshuffle of the state leadership.

In a secret ballot, the 18 elected committee members decided on a reshuffle and elected Manoharan as state chairman.

Manoharan, who is the state DAP legal aid bureau chief, is also the first Indian to hold the post.

Sources said that although Liu and eight members staged a walkout, the others decided to elect Liu as the deputy chairman.

Ong Eng Giam was appointed secretary with Alex Yim as treasurer.

Manoharan, when contacted, said his main priority would be to patch up the differences between the two factions.

“Both Liu and Teng are my friends. I need their support to ensure that the state party prepares for the general election and performs well,” he said.

Manoharan said his election would also bring in more non-Chinese to join the party.

“I will also strive to woo more Malay and Indian professionals to join DAP to project a multi-racial image,” he added.
