JOHOR BARU: Pre-national service programmes should be introduced in secondary schools to ensure a smooth transition into national service for students after their SPM examinations.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said various programmes linked to the compulsory national service should be conducted in schools so that students would know what to expect.

“These programmes can be integrated with extra-curricular activities in schools through the uniformed bodies and, more specifically, through Rakan Muda programmes,” he said yesterday after presenting land titles to settlers at Felda Sungai Sibol in Kulai near here.

Hishammuddin said Rakan Muda should be part of the extra-curricular activities in all schools.

“Rakan Muda can be a way to stop our youths from going wayward.

“I urge schools, NGOs (non-governmental organisations), the private sector and the relevant government agencies to invest their time and energy to promote these programmes,” he said.
