KUALA LUMPUR: As one of the first Malaysian HIV-positive women to speak up about the disease, the late Basariah Sahak had gained recognition as a fighter against discrimination and helped create awareness about the disease during the early years of its outbreak in the 1990s.

She took hospital staff to task on what she considered discriminatory treatment towards her; and worked as a volunteer with the then Pink Triangle to spread public awareness about HIV/AIDS until her death at age 38 several years ago.
