High Wired named Best Asian band


KUALA LUMPUR: Local jazz fusion band High Wired has been named Best Asian band at the Yamaha Asian Beat Finals 2003, beating seven other bands from six countries in the region. 

The six-month-old band, comprising Steve Naris Nanda, 16, (drums), Kevin Choo, 25, (saxophone), Mohd Zadar Kamari, 26, (bass guitar) and Rockie Siew, 34, (keyboard) walked away with US$5,000 (RM19,000) and a Yamaha instrument voucher worth US$3,000 (RM11,400). 

Mohd Zadar also walked away with the Best Bassist award, Siew the Best Keyboardist award while Steve was announced the Best Drummer at a ceremony held at Dewan Perdana Felda along Jalan Maktab here last night. 

They each received a Yamaha instrument voucher for US$1,000 (RM3,800). 

High Wired performed an original instrumental entitled Figured Out

The second place winners were Cadenza from Indonesia which played My Greenish Leaves (a blend of traditional Indonesian music and western rock). 

Third place winner was Outlet from Thailand which performed Leaving. 

The event also included guest performances by Chinese keyboardist Liu Mu, Japanese drumming great Kozo Suga Numa and the Aseana percussion.
