KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Court has ruled that interest on damages in a libel suit can be awarded even if it is not specifically asked for.
In a unanimous decision against lawyer Karpal Singh, it said the High Court was vested with such a discretionary power under Section 11 of the Civil Law Act and was correct in ordering him to pay former Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker D.P. Vijandran interest on the damages he was awarded.
