PENANG: For RM50, the public can rent 50 copies of pirated VCDs of Hong Kong, Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese drama series and have them delivered to their doorsteps here.

And if they are willing to pay double, they will get pornographic VCDs delivered.

Leaflets on the drama series together with a contact number are being dropped into the letterboxes of those staying in flats in areas such as Air Itam, Paya Terubong and Bukit Jambul.

When contacted, a representative from the firm said the pirated VCDs cost RM1 each while the original ones cost RM3 each.

He said pornographic VCDs were also available but at double the price.

“But, we don't have much collection of this (pornography),'' he said.

He added that he operates from his residence.

Commenting on this, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry parliamentary secretary Wong Kam Hoong said he would investigate the matter.

“The operators are resorting to all sorts to tactics following constant raids by the ministry against pornography and pirated VCDs, DVDs and CDs.

“They are becoming creative but it won't be for long,'' he told newsmen yesterday after presenting donations to 11 religious organisations totalling RM76,700 at his service centre in Paya Terubong.

Wong, who is also Bayan Baru MP, said it would soon be compulsory for genuine VCDs and CDS to have a hologram label to enable consumers to differentiate them from pirated products.

“Once this is introduced, it will be easier to identify pirated copies,'' he said.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had on Feb 8 announced that the hologram ruling would be imposed in six months.
