KUANTAN: Sultan of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah Sultan Abu Bakar yesterday became the first Ruler in the country to sign the Malaysians for Peace campaign against war in Iraq.

The event, attended by more than 5,000 people at Wisma Pahang here, saw Sultan Ahmad Shah putting down his signature in a brief ceremony.

In his speech, Sultan Ahmad Shah said he felt that the move to collect the signatures was noble as it reflected the peace-loving nature of Malaysians.

“I felt that I want to be with my subjects to campaign against any war as it only brings misery and untold damage to the lives of war victims.

Quoting an anti-war saying, Sultan Ahmad Shah said: “Either we live as brothers in peace or we perish like fools.”

Among those present at the function was Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, Malaysians for Peace co-ordinating chairman Zulkifli Alwi, Pahang Youth Council president Datuk Faisal Abdullah and other state dignitaries.

Later, Zulkifli confirmed that Sultan Ahmad Shah was the first sultan to sign the signature campaign.

He said he was informed that other state Rulers would follow suit in the campaign against war.

On the state-level signature campaign, Faisal said a total of 46,000 people had come forward to support the move.

Before the signature campaign ends on Feb 16, he said, the figure was expected to surpass the 100,000 mark.
