KUALA LUMPUR: Well-wishers and supporters of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) have not only donated money for the university's fund but also offered land for the setting up of its branch campuses.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik said one supporter offered to give away 809ha of land for a campus. He, however, declined to elaborate.

He said a supporter from Beirut, Lebanon, had also pledged a RM10mil donation from his company and a personal donation of another RM10mil for Utar.

Dr Ling, who is the Transport Minister, said it did not matter whether a person donates RM10 or RM1mil because every sen counted.

“What matters is that it comes from the heart,” he told reporters at the MCA Media Night at Wisma MCA here last night.

Dr Ling said MCA leaders had managed to get their friends to pledge a substantial amount of money for the university, adding that in five to six years Utar was expected to have three campuses - in Kampar, Johor and Kuala Lumpur.

He said the TAR College here has loaned a space within its grounds for a Utar campus, which will be completed in July. Students will move into the campus at the end of the year.

Dr Ling said Utar currently has 1,000 students. Two-thirds of the students, he said, were from independent schools.

Earlier in his speech, he thanked the media for their support in publicising the party's agenda, including Utar, as well as the Government's objectives for Malaysia.

He said through the Prime Minister's liberal policy, the number of publications had increased over the years.

“Competition is good as it sharpens the competitive edge of the paper and in the whole the media for better coverage,” he said.

He said the media night was to show MCA's appreciation and a chance for the party leaders to mingle with journalists in a relaxed atmosphere instead of only meeting during press conferences.
