GEMAS: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) said yesterday a damaged irrigation pond managed by the Negri Sembilan Drainage and Irrigation Department had caused Monday's derailment of the Ekspres Timuran in Kampung Ladang Gemas here.
KTMB managing director Mohd Salleh Abdullah said preliminary investigations revealed that the pond could not withstand the pressure from Sungai Gelama which broke its banks during a downpour, causing strong undercurrents to weaken the soil near the 12m bridge holding the tracks.
