ACCUSED:Hari Singh being led to the magistrate's court in Seremban yesterday.

SEREMBAN: A 37-year-old trailer driver claimed trial in a magistrate's court here yesterday to a charge of causing the deaths of three members of a family in a road accident recently.

G. Hari Singh of Lot 20a, Kampung Segar, Nilai, was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He is alleged to have driven a trailer in a dangerous manner at the 4th kilometre of the Seremban-Mantin road on Jan 25 at 9pm, resulting in the death of L/Kpl Mohd Salleh Othman, 43, Norliza Abdul Rahman, 37, and Nabillah Mohd Salleh, five.

Chief Insp A. Alagaesan requested the court not to grant bail as there was a high possibility the accused would abscond as he had six outstanding warrants of arrest for not attending court cases to answer traffic violations.

“Also, bail should not be granted for the sake of justice and interest to the sole survivor of the incident (L/Kpl Mohd Salleh’s son) Mohd Azhar Salleh, 14, who is still warded at the Seremban Hospital,” he added.

However, Hari Singh’s counsel M. Kevin objected, saying the granting of bail should not be linked to Mohd Azhar.

Magistrate Diana Razali allowed bail at RM7,000 with one surety and fixed April 17 for trial.

She also ordered that the accused’s international passport be surrendered to the court and his driving licence be suspended.
