KUCHING: The Baba Nyonya culture, popular in the peninsula, will be highlighted as part of the Chinese New Year celebrations in Sarawak.

The Malacca Nyonya dance, dondang sayang, a Nyonya costume parade and pantuns in the Baba-Malay language will be featured at the Baba Nyonya Gala Nite 2003 at the waterfront on Feb 8.

The event is jointly organised by the City North Commission and Saberkas (state youth organisation) Kuching Unit, and partially sponsored by the state Tourism Ministry.

Commission public relations officer Hamdan Sharbini said yesterday that Nyonya Tan, a prominent dondang sayang singer, would entertain the crowd.

“The singer will add glamour to the evening, creating nostalgia of the bygone days of the city's Baba Nyonya gatherings.”

Hamdan said major Chinese cultural groups like the Li Sheng classical music group, Fukien opera troupe, Chung Hua School No 1 24-drum troupe and Wushu artists would also at the event.
