KOTA KINABALU: Twelve families will face a bleak Chinese New Year after their homes in Taman Likas Jaya, 2km from here, were destroyed in a fire.

No casualties were reported in the blaze, which broke out at about 4pm yesterday, as many of the occupants were still at work.

One of the affected houses was a playschool but the children were evacuated to safety when the fire broke out.

More than 20 firemen in three engines rushed to the scene. They took more than an hour to bring the fire under control.

Firemen were hampered in their efforts to douse the fire due to low-water pressure from a nearby hydrant.

They were further delayed when they could not locate another hydrant in the vicinity.

Fortunately, Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Datuk Ghapur Salleh, who had rushed over to check out the commotion, spotted a hydrant which had been covered by a structure.

Pensioner William Foo, whose house was among those destroyed, said he could not save any of his belongings.

“I just don’t know what to do now,” said Foo, who had been staying in the housing area for 28 years.

Yang di-Pertua Negri Datuk Ahmadshah Abdullah was visited the affected families and expressed his sympathies to them.

He said he would raise the problem of low-water pressure in the area with the authorities.
