KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu Umno has initiated various programmes under an aggressive campaign launched this year to recapture the state in the next general election, said its liaison committee deputy chairman Datuk Idris Jusoh.

He said the Umno machinery had been activated to expose the various falsehoods and failure of the PAS state government.

“We will expose the various shortcomings of the state government which can be clearly seen to have failed to run the state, causing suffering among the people. We will go all out.

“We have also observed the strong feelings of the people who wish to return to Umno and this is a good sign towards the achievement of the campaign this year to recapture Terengganu,” he told reporters yesterday after presenting financial aid as part of the special payment to 12 non-governmental organisations here.

The NGOs, affiliated to the state Youth Council, received between RM15,000 and RM30,000 each.Idris said the Umno machinery had been mobilised with one purpose, to go on the offensive against the opposition throughout the state and to woo back the people and gain their support for Umno.

“The fact is that Umno is now in a rather comfortable position. This development has created fear within PAS. As such, we need to intensify efforts to win the hearts of the people,” he said.

Idris said Umno members should not place too much emphasis on internal party problems now but to focus on their real enemy – PAS.

Meanwhile, the Terengganu Umno Youth convention to be held in Bandar Al Muktafi Billah Shah in Dungun today would serve as the main platform to plan strategies for the movement in preparation for the elections. Some 1,000 branch and division Umno Youth leaders including several professionals would discuss the direction of the Terengganu Umno Youth movement.

State Umno Youth head Din Adam, who is Dungun Umno Youth division head, said Umno Youth Information chief Azimi Daim would present a paper on the Umno Youth direction to prepare for the general election.

“The convention will be most useful for the Terengganu Umno Youth in its quest to wrest Terengganu for the Barisan Nasional,” he said. – Bernama
