PENANG: Fancy paying RM68,000 for a hamper this Chinese New Year?
That's the price tag for a 2.6m-high giant hamper, placed near the entrance of the Eu Yan Sang Sdn Bhd medical hall in Chulia Street, which has been attracting curious stares from customers and passers-by.
Most people are not only fascinated with its huge size but also the price.
The shop’s assistant area supervisor Andrew Looi said for the past eight years, the company has been making a giant hamper every Chinese New Year as a promotional gimmick but would sell it if there were an offer. So far, there have been no takers for this year's hamper.
“This year’s hamper is the tallest and the most expensive hamper made by the company,” Looi said yesterday.
So what can one expect in a RM68,000 hamper?
The pricey items are two pieces of wild Chinese ginseng (72.2gm) worth RM23,826, Jawa bird’s nest (150gm) worth RM4,950, superior Tibetan cordyceps selling at RM1,552 and abalone costing RM1,008.
Most of the goodies consist of different types of bird's nest. Others include 12 bottles of ginseng wine, six boxes of ginseng tea, 600g of scallops and six bottles of ginger wine.
Looi said that about five of his workers took more than three hours to assemble and pack the items.
