KOTA KINABALU: The wedding reception of former Sipadan hostage Noel Fong Yin Ken and Yumiko Kitaura at the Pacific Sutera Hotel on Sunday turned out to be a reunion of sorts for several former captives and their negotiators.

Lee Hock Leong and Kua Yu Loong, who with Fong and 18 others were grabbed from Pulau Sipadan by Abu Sayyaf gunmen in April 2000, were among the 300 guests.

Also present were Deputy Education Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Samsuddin and former chief minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee, both of whom acted as facilitators in the release of the Malaysian hostages.

REUNION: Former hostages Lee (ledt) and Kua congratulating Fong and Kitaura at their wedding reception in Kota Kinabalu on Sunday night.

Fong said six other former Malaysian hostages could not make it as they were outstation.

They were held captive in Jolo, Philippines, for nearly four months before they were released in stages.

Fong, 31, who now works at the Nexus Karumbunai Resort Lagoon Park, married Kitaura, 30, at a formal Chinese wedding tea ceremony on Saturday.
