KLUANG: The Chinese community has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad for pledging Government support for Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) although it is a private university.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik said this reflected the Government’s concern and support for educational matters, including private universities like Utar.

“Our pledge to the Prime Minister is that we will ensure that Utar will provide the best educational facilities for all Malaysians and mould it into a centre of excellence,” he said.

Dr Ling was speaking at a swearing-in ceremony of the new office bearers for the Johor MCA liaison committee on Friday night.

Also present among the 3,000-strong crowd were party vice-presidents Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting and Datuk Dr Fong Chan Onn, Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Datuk Lim Si Cheng and state MCA liaison committee chairman Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek.

At the function, Dr Ling received contributions from 18 of the 20 Johor MCA divisions for Utar, totalling RM1.83mil.
