KUALA LUMPUR: For Former Miss Malaysia Ravin Sandhu, participating in a fund-raising fashion show for Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) brings back fond memories of her college days.
It was at TAR College that Ravin, 37, won her first beauty pageant title when she was made the first runner up during the freshmen orientation week.
Several years later in 1988, she was crowned Miss Malaysia/Asia Pacific.
“When I first read that an organiser is searching for former beauty queens to participate in a charity fashion show to raise fund for Utar, I thought that it would be a noble idea to contribute to education.
“When I later found out that Utar is closely linked to TAR College, I feel the project has become something special to me and it brings back good old memories,'' she told The Star yesterday.
The mother of two, who is a relocation consultant handles the arrival and departure of foreign expatriates, would be among 16 former beauty queens to parade in traditional Nyonya Kebaya during a dinner-cum-fashion show on Feb 14 to raise RM1mil for Utar.
Other beauty queens participating include Nancie Foo, Datin Fauziah Harun, Heidi Hamid and Maggie Loo.
Heidi, 29, who was Miss Malaysia/Wonderland 1990, said having a child who was approaching school-going age had made her realise how important education was.
“Although my daughter is only five-years-old, I have been scouting around for schools,'' she said.
The event organiser, Yayasan Wanita Cemerlang, a non-profit organisation for underprivileged girls and women, called for more beauty queens to come forward for a good cause.
Those interested in attending the Feb 14 charity fashion show can contact the foundation at 03-7957 1333. Dinner is priced at RM10,000 for a table of 10 persons.
