KUALA LUMPUR: The people of Rawang will organise the largest Ponggal cooking festival with over 350 families participating at the Sri Veerakathi Vinayagar Temple at 4pm on Wednesday.
Organising chairman P. Kamalanathan said over 2,000 people are expected to be present at the event to mark the thanksgiving celebration for bountiful harvests held on the 10th month of the Tamil calendar.
The highlight of the three-day Ponggal celebration is the cooking of sweet milk rice made of freshly harvested paddy with milk and brown sugar in new earthen pots.
“We will also be having a one-hour cultural performance,” he said, adding that it was organised by the people of Rawang, MIC Selayang division and the temple with support of the Selangor government.
He said the event would likely be entered as the largest Ponggal cooking festival in the Malaysia Book of Records.
Thai Ponggal is celebrated on the first day of the Thai month in the Tamil calendar, normally on Jan 14 or Jan 15.
