IPOH: Manjung police have detained a member of the “Gang 24,” a secret society involved in extortion and collecting protection money from businessmen.

The 35-year-old man was arrested at 3am near a restaurant in Taman Sentosa Dua, Sitiawan, by a team of six policemen led by Chief Insp Tan Bak Hua.

He was the 19th gang member to be arrested since police launched Operasi Sakai in 2001 to track down the Gang 24 members.

Manjung police chief Supt Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said the suspect would be detained at the Simpang Rengam detention centre in Johor for two years under Section 3 (1) of the Emergency Ordinance.

He said police were on the lookout for more gang members, including the leader known as Sakai and anyone knowing their whereabouts should contact the police.
