SIBU: A pregnant woman and her two young daughters are missing after a longboat carrying them capsized on hitting a log in Ulu Sungai Mukah near here yesterday.

They were identified as Mias Sembilang, 31, who is eight months' pregnant, and her daughters Ina Duseph, five, and Anna, three.

The boatman Lumek Tegong, 31 – who was on her way to sell vegetables in the new Selangau town market –was saved by a passing longboat in the 7.30am incident.

Mias and her daughters had joined Lumek from their longhouse in Emperan Chapi for the trip to visit Mias’ husband, Duseph Jalang, 32, who is working with a construction company in the town.

Fire and Rescue Department personnel, policemen and relatives of the victims have launched a search for the three.

According to Lumek, they were about 200m from the jetty of the old Selangau town, about 80km from here, when the incident happened.

She said Anna’s hat had fallen into the river and they made a U-turn to retrieve it.

“It was then that the boat crashed into the log and capsized,” she added.

Mias was last seen holding tightly to her two daughters and trying to swim to the bank before they were washed away by the swift-flowing waters.

Met at Selangau town, Duseph said he had not expected his family to visit him yesterday as they normally came on Sundays. – Bernama
