PETALING JAYA: MTUC deputy president Mohd Shafie B.P. Mammal has assured that the tussle for the presidency within MTUC will not affect industrial peace in the country and reiterated that the problem was only between him and congress president Senator Zainal Rampak.

Mohd Shafie, who is National Union of Telekom Workers' (NUTE) president, has also given his assurance that his members would not in any way be involved in pickets over the leadership crisis in the vicinity of the Transport Workers Union (TWU) building.

“I will cancel all pickets with regards to the leadership issue, permanently,'' he said.

Initially, Mohd Shafie had threatened to hold pickets at the TWU office in Jalan Barat here, where Zainal is general secretary.

This happened when Zainal did not let go of the president's post after Dec 31 as his supporters wanted him to stay on as president despite an earlier pact he made with Mohd Shafie.

The picket was to get Zainal to abide by the pact, in which Zainal had told Mohd Shafie that he would step down for a smooth transition of power on Dec 31.

The deal resulted in Mohd Shafie withdrawing from standing against Zainal during the congress’ triennial elections in March last year.

“This matter is solely between me and Zainal. I have considered the concerns and apprehensions of Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr Fong Chan Onn, about the ongoing leadership crisis and say that members of NUTE will not be involved in pickets over this issue in the vicinity of the TWU building,” he added.
